Instructions for an exam with Safe Exam Browser

General:

Exams are done with test activities in Moodle. The icon is a red tick. Here is an example of a test:

Starting an exam or demo exam

  • Computer poolroom of the HRZ -> also suitable for demo exams:
    • These are the only computer poolrooms as of January 2023 where you can log in to the computer with your TU ID.

    • Room list: https://www.hrz.tu-darmstadt.de/services/it_services/pc_pools/index.de.jsp

    • In particular: S1|22 room 020 is used for computer exams.

    • Login at the computer: TU ID

    • Start Chrome or Edge

    • Log in to Exam Moodle and go to the demo course for computer poolrooms

    • Select the appropriate demo exam

    • Download the configuration file and enter the download directory

    • Start the demo exam by double-clicking on it with the Safe Exam Browser

    • Note: If messages about page could not be loaded appear, then simply click ok.

    • Note: If you do not see a red button to start, please click on the reload page or press F5.

  • Computer poolroom in general -> no independent testing possible: Starting the exam may differ depending on the computer poolroom - one of the following three variants will apply:
    • You start the exam as you would on your own computer via a browser. See: Starting the exam on your own computer

    • You start the exam via a config file that can be found on the desktop or in the start menu. You are then asked for the TU ID and are then in the exam dashboard and can open it.

    • The Safe Exam Browser is already started, and you log in to Moodle with your TU ID.

Functions in the Safe Exam Browser

You will see the first page of the demo exam. Starting from this, the most important operating elements are presented. Following this, there are screenshots of the first part of the demo exam. Part 2 of the demo exam contains function tests that are not relevant for all exams, but can be relevant depending on the exam because the tasks do not require all functions. Part 3 of the demo exam contains either an old exam or some examples of tasks from the exam administration so that you can get to know the style of the exam, if the exam administration is able to provide examples in time.

The most important controls are now presented.

  • Quitting the Safe Exam Browser:
    • The Quit Password will be issued to everyone by the invigilator at the end of the exam.
    • If leaving the exam early is allowed, then sign in and the invigilator will enter the password.
    • Pay attention to announcements before or during the examination to enable the examination to run as smoothly as possible, especially at the end of the examination.
    • Alternative setting: After the exam has been submitted - i.e. no more changes are possible - a button is displayed which closes the Safe Exam Browser.

  • The Safe Exam Browser Default browser and, if necessary, other programmes:

    • The standard browser can be found at the bottom right (see red box).
    • When this is clicked, the open windows and tabs become visible (see yellow boxes).
    • The purple box in the picture shows where other programmes can be found within the Safe Exam Browser. Are to be found:
    • Example of a configuration without further programmes:
  • Functions of the Safe Exam Browser that are usually enabled:

    • Accessible via the functions (see red box).
      • The zoom function is usually enabled (see yellow box).
      • Search page by words is usually also enabled. Text in images cannot be found. PDFs within the browser do not necessarily have to be searchable. (see purple box)
      • Example:
  • Navigation in the standard browser of the Safe Exam Browser: This is usually restricted in the main window. This avoids operating errors. Use the links in the Moodle test to navigate.

    • You usually only have to reload here. If necessary, forward and back as well as the start page of the exam may also be available here.

    • In general, it is better to use the navigation elements of Moodle, because the current processing status of the exam is sent to the Moodle server every time the page is changed. See yellow and purple boxes.

    • The instructions will go into more detail about navigation in the test activity at a later stage:

  • The other windows are used to display aids and the like.

    • Another window was opened via the links in a written exam.
      • See purple boxes ~ here the Safe Exam Browser website was opened.
      • An example of control elements of a second window. Advanced navigation is also often enabled there, because no operating errors can occur on the exam here. Here, for example, forward and back can be seen.
      • Example of other windows:
  • Settings for the WLAN: for your own devices or devices loaned by the TU, use your own login for EDU-Roam.
    More about eduroam:
Here you can see an example for notebooks with the display and control WLAN as well as display for power supply:

  • Keyboard layout settings. If you prefer a different keyboard layout, you can set this:

Presentation of the Demo Examination Part 1

This section introduces the navigation and some features of the Moodle activity Test using the first section of the demo exam.

  • First page: This is usually where resources are linked. Often there is also a short greeting. There is also often a task here that takes over the function of the cover sheet.
  • On the next four pages of the test, you will try out the functions of the Safe Exam Browser. At this point, the instructions will deal with the navigation and the task marking function.
    • In the test navigation, you can see a page/assignment that has been viewed in purple, the current page has a bold black frame and is marked in red, all assignments that have not yet been completed or texts that have not been viewed are marked in yellow:
    • The test navigation is shown here again without colored markings. The page shown here is on the 3rd page.
You can jump directly to the desired pages/tasks in the test navigation.
Previous and next pages are also available. See purple markings:
    • The remaining processing time is displayed. If the processing time should be extended, then the countdown will be updated at the next page change. See purple box.
    • Here the item marking function was used (see left purple box with arrow). In the test navigation, the task is now marked with a red corner. You can use this as a reminder if, for example, you want to revise an item later:
  • Last page of the demo exam:
Blue box: "Complete attempt" If this button is pressed, the exam goes into the status completed and is handed in. In the case of early submission, this button must have been pressed. The examination is submitted automatically when the time runs out. Make a final page turn in the last few seconds so that you have also submitted the last processing status manually.
    Purple box: unprocessed marked task
    Yellow box: completed marked task
    Red box: incomplete task
  • Log out with password "quit". In the real exam, you will receive the quit password from the invigilator at the end of the exam. If you want to leave the room early, the invigilator will enter the quit password when it has been checked that you have handed in the exam.
  • Alternatively, any link directly to the course will exit the Safe Exam Browser.

Part 2 Function test in the demo test:

Not all tasks in this area are presented, because that would not be purposeful. However, you can take a look at what is necessary.

In this section, you can test some types of tasks.

Try everything out so that you can be sure that everything you need works in the Safe Browser environment.

Hint 1: Not all task types or functions will be needed in your exam. In particular, mathematical entries or drawings do not have to be part of the exam.

Hint 2: If it turns out that task types are not needed, they may be removed from Part 2 of the demo exam.

  • Drag & Drop Task
    • There can be more drop elements than drop zones!
      • Purple: set drop element
      • Yellow: empty drop zones
      • Blue: unused drop elements
      • Orange: drop element in motion
      • Red box: marker for incomplete task - incomplete tasks are also evaluated.
      • Example:
  • Drawing task:
    • Yellow: Tools (freehand pencil, line, text field)

    • Blue: Settings of the tools

    • Red: Select objects on the drawing surface. This allows objects to be removed by pressing the delete key or by clicking on the dustbin. The settings of the object can also be changed.

    • Orange: Undo and Redo

    • Purple: Set the zoom factor of the drawing area.

    • Example:

  • Free text task + drawing::

Either select the image to be changed and press the pencil, or start a new drawing on a free area. Press Insert Drawing at the end.
  • Mathematics and tables in free text tasks:
